Handsome Again?

WHEN Santino Deng was ten years old, men in his village pulled six of his teeth out – the six bottom front teeth. Why?

In Santino’s village in Sudan, in Africa, it is the custom. People there say, “Men with no front teeth look handsome. Women with no front teeth look beautiful.”

So, when the children in Santino’s village are ten years old, men pull their teeth out. The children do not cry. The boys want to look handsome. The girls want to look beautiful.

Now Santino has a problem. He is living in the United States. People in the United States think, “Men with no front teeth are not handsome. Women with no front teeth are not beautiful.”

There is another problem. In Santino’s village, all the food is soft. It is easy to eat with no front teeth. In the United States, not all the food is soft. It is not easy to eat apples and hamburgers with no front teeth.

A dentist is putting new teeth in Santino’s mouth. It is expensive, and it is painful. But Santino wants the new teeth. “In Sudan, I was handsome,” he says. “Here, I am not. I want to be handsome again.”

Mr. Gwynn is in Hawaii with friends. He is on vacation, and he is having a wonderful time.

One afternoon Mr. Gwynn was standing on a high rock. He was looking at the ocean. He saw a girl in the water below. The girl was in trouble. She was far from the beach, and she couldn’t swim. Mr. Gwynn took off his backpack and his shoes. Then he jumped into the water, swam to the girl, and pulled her to the beach.

The girl wasn’t breathing. Mr. Gwynn gave her CPR, and the girl began to breathe again. Later, an ambulance came. Paramedics checked the girl. “She is fine,” the paramedics told Mr. Gwynn. “You saved her life.”

Mr. Gwynn walked back to the high rock. His shoes were there, but his backpack was gone. Mr. Gwynn’s credit cards, his camera, and his money were all in the backpack. “Well,” Mr. Gwynn thought, “this is the end of my vacation.”

Mr. Gwynn’s story was in the newspaper. People read about Mr. Gwynn and the girl. They also read about Mr. Gwynn’s backpack.

A hotel owner told Mr. Gwynn, “Your room here is free.” Restaurant owners told Mr. Gwynn, “Your meals here are free.” People gave a lot of money to Mr. Gwynn, “ for a new camera,” they said. “Buy some other things, too. Have fun in Hawaii.”
